I awoke to the sound of rain. (Lots of it and it more or less rained all day). My route started going through the picturesque Margam Park. The gates at both ends of the park are not bike-friendly and I had to remove my panniers to get through. The route throught the park is hilly with many stony tracks.

The route then heads eastwards Caerphilly with many excellent cycle paths, some along disused railways lines, but also some terrible ones. One I remember especially was a track across a some fields way up in the hills. Extremely stony and uneven and quite a climb up.

After Pontypridd with its fine castle....

......the route took me along more old railway lines

Hereafter the route winds towards Newport and then northwards along Chepstow. There were varying surfaces ranging from quiet roads, narrow bumpy tracks, cycle paths and stony tracks. NCN4 then crosses into England using the original Severn Bridge

After the bridge the route follows quiet country roads southwards towards Bristol. At my overnight stop in Bristol I replaced all my bike's brake blocks which, after three days cycling through the Welsh hills, were completely shot!
