From Laugharne with its castle, NCN4 winds along country lanes northwards. At St. Clears the route goes next to the busy A40 more or less on a pavement shared with pedestrians before turning south along some winding and quiet lanes towards the city of Carmarthen.
After this it heads south with views across the Towy estuary at Ferryside before heading inland to the town of Kidwelly.

After Kidwelly there is one stretch of at least a mile which is a narrow, bumpy grass track.

After the Pembrey Country Park NCN4 goes along the Millenium Coastal Path which is around 7 miles of wonderful, wide cycle paths along the front offering superb views across the Gower Peninsular ending up at Llanelli.

Hereafter the route goes across the Gower Peninsular, along Swansea Bay and along the front to Swansea before going eastwards and through Port Talbot and passing the giant steel works.
My day ended up in the peaceful Margam on the edge of Margam Park.

Stilton and mushroom salad with a pint of Reverend James, brewed by the Brains brewery in Cardiff.
(Twelve Knights pub, Margam).
